Reno Heartbreak

Jenny’s Report:

Long drive this morning back to Reno. We hate to leave the Black Rock Desert behind. It seems to have lifted Lisa’s depression and cleared our minds a bit. But my brother needs his truck back and Lisa and I have a month off. We need to get on with our trip all around Nevada.

I’m so glad I found a way for us to do this so we don’t have to stay holed up in motels and hotels. A friend of mine is having trouble making payments on his little RV. He took me up on my suggestion that I would make this month’s payment and insurance if we could use it. Win-win for both of us. We need to pick it up tomorrow.

We stop at our places to clean up. Then out to for some terrific Korean food at Arario Midtown with some friends. Everyone has ideas about places we should go. We spend some time making some last-minute changes to our itinerary.

Then all of us go to a free concert in the park* down by the Truckee River.

The music is great, but the evening is turning into a disaster.

Lisa’s ex-fiancé, Martin, is here with his new girlfriend. The woman is built like a playboy bunny and wearing a tight purple sundress that sets off her bottle-blond hair. I don’t even know where Martin found a woman like her. She looks like she thinks people should worship her. I see Martin bring her a glass of wine and a meal, almost genuflecting, while she just lounges on her low-back beach chair.

Come on girl, we need to get an early start, I say to Lisa, trying to get her out of here before she sees him.

But I thought we couldn’t pick up the RV until late morning. I’m enjoying the concert.

We need to shop, get organized. We want to get to Yerington before dark.

Chill out Jenny, We’ve got plenty of time.

Well, I’m leaving now, and I’ve got the car.

Damn it, who put you in charge? Lisa says, getting up from the blanket on the grass. You’re acting just like you did in third grade. Trying to take me away from my other friends. I’ll get a ride with Mary.

I walk Lisa up to her apartment and wait for her to finish crying.

I really thought I could start having kids with him, Lisa says. But he’s just like my dad, leaving for a prettier woman. That’s why we had to move out of the old neighborhood. You’d already moved away.

I didn’t know that. How did your mom do?

She struggled for a while. I had to take care of my little brother while Mom just walked around like a Zombie. But then she finally took control and built a good and happy life for all of us.

Maybe you’ll do that too, I tell her.

Finally, she smiles faintly, straightens up, and says, I’m going to bed. See you in the morning. We’ll get our early start.

I stay and fall asleep on her couch.

I wait to see that’s she’s up and dressed in the morning.

We gather her belongings and go pick up the little RV and head down the road toward Yerington. Our big trip is finally underway.
