Getting Ready for the Black Rock Desert, Minus Burning Man

Jennie and Lisa still want to camp in the Black Rock Desert this summer, even though Burning Man is canceled. They can’t agree on how to prepare for it though.

Jenny wants to do some serious planning. She’s working on publishing a travelogue for all their trips.

Lisa just wants to get out of Reno, play it by ear.

But people die out there every year, Jenny points out. If we get lost, we could roam until the weather or dehydration gets us.

Don’t be such a damn Drama Queen! Lisa argues. I don’t need any more complications. I’ve got a whole pile of people that I’m supposed to talk with and tell them the wedding is off. I’ve got presents to return. I also just want to scream every time anyone tells me what to do.

But Lisa, we are gonna have the greatest adventure of our lives. We can leave all this behind. The gifts can go back when we return. Or maybe you better just bring them over to Martin’s house and he can do it. He’s the one who canceled everything.

But doesn’t that always fall to the woman? Lisa asked.

Well, I think that it’s time for that to change. You can just send out a group text letting people know you’re going to be gone for a month.

I wish it was that easy, Lisa sighed. Can’t we just throw some things in the back of the truck and go?

She was back in her pajamas. The relief from her depression that she’d felt on the Pyramid Lake camping trip was fading.

Well, Jenny said, it won’t be as easy as going out to Pyramid. I looked at the Friends of the Black Rock High Rock website. They talk about all kinds of dangers. Our cell phones and GPS won’t work out there and people get lost all the time. There are no services, stores, restaurants for miles and miles. We’re going to be 70 miles from a hospital with rattlesnakes scorpions, mountain lions, and coyotes. If it rains and the Playa gets wet, we might be stuck out there for weeks if we don’t have a winch.

Tell me again why we’re going, Lisa demanded. It sounds like more trouble than I have the energy for.

This is the only time we might have for this big adventure. Plus, you’ve read Wild by Cheryl Strayed. She fixed her broken heart out on the trail.

Yes, but she pretty much just went out and did it, Lisa argued. Things worked out for her. We don’t have to do all this planning. You know it makes my head hurt.

Come on Lisa., I’ll do most of the planning. I know you love astronomy. It’s the Perseids meteor shower this month. It’s really dark out there. We can take a star shower ourselves. Then we can explore the area and do some serious bathing in the Hot Springs.

Then Jenny just started tossing the wedding presents into a big basket and carrying them out the door to the truck below.

What are you doing? Lisa screamed.

Bringing these damn presents to Martin, Jenny replied.

OK, you win. Lisa giggled as she grabbed a few more of the gifts and ran after Jenny. Let’s go!

Get Ready Slow

Unless you’re an experienced primitive camper, getting ready will be a project. You’ll slow down in the desert. You might as well start that slowing down the process as you get ready. Relax, check your list several times. That way you won’t end up in the dark without your flashlight.

Camping in The Black Rock isn’t for the faint at heart.

But it just might just cure you of a broken heart or your addiction to the problems of modern life. There is so much out there to see or do. Make an appointment for a guided tour to Fly Geyser. Hike in the canyons surrounding the playa, visit archaeological sites, sit still, read a book during the day, and enjoy the stars at night. You can take one of those dirt roads to Denio and dig for opals.

Live the simple life for a week or two.
